We were contracted to do a full refurbishment in Winchester to some casement windows. Using our expertise in working on heritage buildings we were ready to ensure that the finish and fit were done correctly the leaves (side hinged windows) had to be completely removed and worked on separately. We had to dig out the rotten wood, treat it with resin and when this had set it could be sanded to the profile of the frame to retain the aesthetic and stability of the window.
Eastgate Street is a row of Grade II listed houses, so working on this project required the specialist treatment that we provide. Listed buildings have their own set of regulations that must be adhered to so they retain their status as being of ‘special interest’. This means that they warrant every effort to preserve and retain their original appearance.
To enable the leaves to fit into the refurbished and painted frame, new timbers were spliced in where needed and resin was applied and sanded so the joints were not visible. It is really important that this is done with time and due care so that the windows can open and close smoothly and prevent the paint rubbing off over time.
We then fitted our bespoke draught proof system which is approved for use on listed buildings and retains the charm and value of the property. It also helps to keep a home warm and reduces heating costs, and as it does not usually require planning permission it is well worth having it fitted.
All the usual preparations were done with sanding and priming and the frame and windows were painted inside and out. An extra top coat of paint was then added to maintain the durability of the finish. We use a specialist paint that is in keeping with the age of the building but will also keep it’s look for years to come.
The finished project has really enhanced the appearance of this home and retained the character and grandeur of this lovely row of houses. We are really pleased to have been able to be part of this refurbishment in of full a refurbishment in Winchester.
