Restoration in Taunton

Summary and Specification

Summary: This project involved a complete restoration and upgrade of traditional sash windows across multiple elevations of the property. The work focused on the lounge, master bedroom, kitchen, and daughter’s room, ensuring each window was expertly refurbished to improve both functionality and aesthetics. The process began with removing and disposing of the existing secondary glazing. Next, the team extracted the sashes, removed staff and parting beads, and cut out the existing pulleys or balance systems. Afterward, they replaced the old glass with high-quality slim double-glazed (SDG) units, significantly enhancing energy efficiency while preserving the windows’ original character. To prepare for the new glazing, they routed the window frames, applied primer, and sealed them with silicone for durability. Additionally, they carried out necessary repairs, including resin restoration on one of the bedroom bay windows, to strengthen the timber structure. The existing capping-off sills remained intact for later plastic replacement. Finally, all windows were fully restored, ensuring smooth operation, improved insulation, and a visually appealing finish that maintained the property’s timeless charm.

Specification: The refurbishment seamlessly combined traditional craftsmanship with modern energy-efficient improvements. First, the team installed new slim double-glazed units and secured them with precision-applied silicone and hardwood putty-style timber beading. Where necessary, they fitted and pinned timber overlay glazing bars to reinforce structural integrity. Next, they primed all bare timbers and integrated draught excluders into the mid-rails to improve insulation. To ensure smooth sash movement, they replaced or adjusted the rope and pulley or balance system. Additionally, they installed new parting and staff beads with fitted draught excluders, further enhancing efficiency. For the finishing touches, they sanded all surfaces and addressed any signs of rot before applying an undercoat and two topcoats for a flawless, long-lasting appearance. By carefully balancing preservation with modernisation, the project successfully delivered beautifully restored, energy-efficient sash windows. The customer was highly satisfied with the outcome, appreciating the improved comfort, functionality, and classic aesthetic of their upgraded windows.
