Victorian doors for houses date back from 1837 – 1901, were normally made from a softwood and painted, stained or grained to make them look like hardwood.  The doors were panelled and divided into four or six sections, in which some were filled with glass.  A beautiful front door was very important and would make a statement and would be always be well maintained and complemented by eye-catching polished brass furniture.

With the Edwardian era of 1901 -1910 the doors were made larger and normally were accompanied with a side window to let in more light into the hallway.  The doors were often panelled and painted and decorated with Art Nouveau or neo-Georgian glass. It was popular at the time for these doors to be painted red of green.  As most households no longer had maids to polish the door furniture or scrub the steps the furniture became a maintenance free black coating.

1714-1837 Georgian & Regency Style

Typical Georgian door would of been a simple six panelled design without glass. The two smaller top panels may of been changed to glass in the later Georgian or Victorian period.

1830-1901 Victorian

Victorian houses tended to have narrow hallways and entrances. The front door was often made of softwood and painted, stained or grained to look like hardwood. The doors would have been panelled, divided into four or six sections with some panels filled with glass. A beautiful front door would have been very important to the Victorian home owner so it would have been well maintained with gleaming brass furniture.

1901-1920 Edwardian

Edwardian houses were often built on wider plots so a side window sometimes flanked the main door letting in more light to the hallway. The front door was often large, panelled and painted with Art Nouveau or Neo-Georgian glass. It was popular to paint the doors red or green. By the Edwardian period most householders no longer had maids to scrub the step and polish the brass knockers so door furniture was finished with a maintenance free black coating. Steps were made of stone or covered with a simple sheet of metal.

Panelling

Panelling started to become popular in the 14th century, and at the time was usually oak. Which could be left plain or be carved with decorative detail. Elaborate linenfold designs, which resembled folded linen, emerged as a trend in the late 15th century. While in Tudor and Jacobean times the fashion was for small squares or rectangles, with the wood either left unfinished or treated with wax or varnish. The panelling was often topped off with decorative carved capping.

In the Georgian era, panelling took on a more classic appearance, with larger, simple panels of painted softwood. Over the period, full-height styles began to be replaced by dado-level panelling.

The Victorians continued this trend for shorter sections, although panelling did become less popular until the Arts and Crafts movement, where simple oak designs fitted up to head height were preferred.

As part of our services working on older buildings we are often asked if we can match older profiles, this is not a problem. We can match profiles, skirtings panelling and more to match the original items within your home. We often use this if we are carrying out our window restoration services and discover rotten profile. We will then cut off a section for the joinery to have cutters made to fit before manufacturing the require amount.
